Some days, 24 hours is too much to stay put in, so I take the day hour by hour, moment by moment. I break the task, the challenge, the fear into small, bite-size pieces. I can handle a piece of fear, depression, anger, pain, sadness, loneliness, illness. I actually put my hands up to my face, one next to each eye, like blinders on a horse.

... any search for a 'pain-free existence' is doomed to failure. The more we try to avoid the basic reality that all human life involves pain, the more we are likely to struggle with that pain when it arises, thereby creating even more suffering.

Justin Playfair / Sherlock Holmes: We're almost there. Dr. Mildred Watson: I'm ready. Holmes: Do you really mean to walk with me? Watson: I do. Holmes: We may have to walk near dangers, close to awful things. Watson: I know that. Holmes: Sometimes, there are villains so big, they block the sun out for miles around. I may not always win. Watson: Does justice ever lose? Holmes: It does... from time to time. We'll meet him here. Get down. Somewhere... out there in the dark, he waits. Watson: I'm not afraid... because you're with me. Holmes: Any we'll always be together? Watson: All our lives. Holmes: I can't remember how I lived before you came. Watson: Oh Holmes, I love you! Holmes: Listen! Watson: What? Holmes: It's him. It's Moriarity. Watson: There's nothing. Holmes: Now... he's coming... on horseback riding like a king. Watson: I can't hear! Holmes: ... Not on my knees. Watson: There's nothing... there's nothing! Holmes: On you feet, by me. Watson: Sound... please, just a little sound... Holmes: Stand up. Watson: Holmes, he's not there... there isn't any Moriarity, it's just- Holmes: You hear it? Nearer... nearer... ah, now, there, do you see him now? Watson: Not yet! ... Yes, I see him. He's everything you said he was! Holmes: He makes you proud. Watson: He does! Holmes: Stand closer to me. Watson: Hold my hand. Holmes: And now we're together. Watson: Yes. Holmes: Let it be said... they found us very close together... in the night.

Et Cetera:

Features audio from Father’s Day 2009 (on Story of My Conquest - Thanks family, sorry we don’t talk) and from the 1971 Anthony Harvey film They Might Be Giants (on Boredom Part ii: Take Time for You), starring George C. Scott and Joanne Woodward, and the ending theme by John Barry.

They Might Be Giants (the film) is, I believe, © Universal Pictures - I do not hold any rights to the original audio beyond creative fair use for this project.

Features quotes original said by Regina Brett (on Laments of a Metal Horse) and Russ Harris (on Spell Our Doom, Cruel World).
